‘Sunset’ for Tina Arena?

Tina Arena may be set to star in her next blockbuster musical.

The iconic Aussie singer is rumoured to headline a new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s blockbuster Sunset Boulevard in 2022.

The diva set tongues wagging on her current tour, unexpectedly adding the showstopper “As if we never said goodbye” to her setlist.

Ms Arena has starred in six musicals across her career and has been known to add showstoppers from them to her concerts.

With three Andrew Lloyd Webber shows already up her sleeve (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Whistle Down the Wind and Evita), Arena surprised audiences at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer music bowl on Saturday when she performed the song from Sunset.

Backed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Ms Arena stopped the show and got a prolonged standing ovation.

Social media lit up after the sold-out concert as fans wondered if Tina would reprise her success in Evita with producers Gordon-Frost and Opera Australia.

It is uncertain who currently owns the Australian production rights to Sunset Boulevard.

The musical, based on the oscar winning Hollywood movie of the same name, was last given a full stage production in Australia in 1996.

Tina Arena would play the role of Norma Desmond, a faded silent movie star whose delusional world collapses after an affair with a young writer.

The role has been played on stage by some of Broadway’s biggest names including Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley and Elaine Paige as well as Hollywood star Glenn Close and recording artist Petula Clark.
